A Whole Life by Robert Seethaler is quite a short novel but the character Andreas Egger takes on his life's journey. Just a lovely, gentle story of one man and his experiences. I've already read The Tobacconist which I loved more than this one. Also I got this one out of the library. We really need to use them more. #awholelife #robertseethaler #library #journey #gentle #picador #thetobacconist

Not sure if I’ll ever reach the dizzy heights of the number of likes on my last post again, but I’ll plough on regardless 😂. This is my next read, bought last December and sat on my shelf. Going to try and finish before I go to Greece next Friday coz nothing says holiday like cracking into a new book on the plane. #iamreading #robertseethaler #bookstagram

'You know, it's a funny thing: the longer the days get, the shorter life feels. It's a contradiction, but that's the way it is. They talk, chatter, gossip, tell stories, and they do it practically nonstop.' #thetobacconist # robertseethaler #seethaler #book #Vienna #weekend

Such a pretty cover *shiny eyes* Not gonna lie, this was a cheap 2nd hand cover buy. But the story sounds interesting and set around WW1. I’ve been reading a few war stories lately and my current read is actually The English Patient which I’ll post about soon. . Coffee + book + Sunday avo = 👌🏽The Tobacconist almost feels as if it was written for the stage, quite simple in style with the protagonists almost caricatures of themselves. The context of pre WWII Vienna helps but I wouldn’t suggest rushing out to the shops for this one. ☕️📚 • • • #RocksReads #TheTobacconist #Vienna #Coffee #SundayAfternoon #BookClub

🇬🇧Robert Seethaler is one of those writers I discovered by mere chance in a bookshop when I was browsing the shelves aimlessly. I first read A Whole Life from him, and I was already in love when I finished the book. So I had to read The Tobacconist as well. It is the second novel by Seethaler that was published in English. (I hope there'll be many more!) The book tells the story of a young man; Franz (17), in Vienna and the year is 1937. He works as an apprentice in Otto's tobacco shop and among the regulars is Freud. But do you know what happens in 1938? Austria unites with Nazi Germany and everything changes in their lives irrevocably. 🌿 I've heard that A Whole Life and The Tobacconist are a bit different in style and if you love one, you won't like the other as much. Have you read Seethaler before? What do you think? . Vienna, 1937, Franz moves from the countryside to the big city to become an apprentice at a tobacconist's, where he reads the newspapers and meets Sigmund Freud, one of his customers. Franz also falls in love. This bildungsroman is set at a time of rising nazism in Austria, and reminded me of Christopher Isherwood and Cabaret. The translation by Charlotte Collins is excellent, and I love the cover design by Matthew Garrett. #vienna #1930s #austria #nazism #sigmundfreud #robertseethaler #persecutionofjews #picador #psychoanalysis #bookstagram #literature #booklovers #amreading #readeverywhere #bookworld #bookclub "Freud sighed, Most paths do at least seem vaguely familiar to me. But it's not actually our destiny to know the paths. Our destiny is precisely not to know them. We don't come into this world to find answers, but to ask questions. We grope around, as it were, in perpetual darkness, and it's only if we're very lucky that we sometimes see a little flicker of light."

The Tobacconist by Robert Seethaler. This book is short, sharp and takes the reader on a journey. It’s about a young boy moving to the big city and growing up in the process. He works in a tobacconist just as Austria is invaded by the nazis and encounters the anti Semitism that goes with it. He meets Sigmund Freud, he meets a girl and he falls in love. A very eventful book and a very interesting short read #thebatterseabookreview #london #bookstagram #bookreview #battersea

#februarywrapup time. 📚 6 books this month, 4 fiction, 1 non-fiction and one that seems to straddle the two... 😄 1. The Crow Girl - no one does thrillers quite like the Scandinavians. It may have been nearly 800 pages but I could barely bring myself to put it down. 2. A Murder of Quality - I love le Carré but this wasn’t one of my favourites. I much prefer the proper spy novels. 3. Fire & Fury - I’m half inclined to pretend I didn’t read this, but I did. It’s about as trashy as you’d expect. True or not it’s not that much of a stretch to believe he’s that stupid. 4. The Tobacconist - I loved his last book ‘A Whole Life’ so had high expectations and this didn’t disappoint. I love his writing style. 5. 21st Century Yokel - reading about Tom Cox’s life was a pleasure as always. 6. The View on the Way Down - I read this in one sitting, quite a heartbreaker but well written. #februaryreads #februaryreads2018 💙📖💙 _____ #ErikAxlLund - #TheCrowGirl #JohnLeCarré - #AMurderOfQuality #MichaelWolff - #FireAndFury #RobertSeethaler - #TheTobacconist #TomCox - #21stCenturyYokel #RebeccaWait - #TheViewOnTheWayDown _____ #books #bookworm #booklover #booknerd #bookstagram #bibliophile #instabooks #reading #bookish

Back home, although still firmly in Vienna with Robert Seethaler’s brilliant novel The Tobacconist! I have actually had to slow down reading this book so I can savour it. It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but as you may spot from the tunic-wearing figure in the background - I have been stage managing a production of Julius Caesar that was on a couple of weeks ago! I just finished The Tobacconist, after hearing nothing but good things about this novel. Set in Vienna in 1937, before the rise of the Nazi Party, I thought this novel would be fascinating and complex, in its depiction of life just before the world changed forever. However, I was left slightly disappointed. For me, there was too much of a preoccupation with intimacy and unrequited lust. The characters, especially the female ones, were not well developed enough for me. The moments the novel really shone were it’s politically minded ones. I longed for more of that, but unfortunately can only give this 3 stars. • • • • • • • • • #Book #bookstagram #books #litstagram #literature #translation #history #historicalfiction #politicalfiction #nowreading #bookshelf #bookworm #bookish #bookobsessed #bookaholic #bookdesign #booknerds #books📚 #bookcommunity

- “You asked me if I knew anything about love. The truth is: I know nothing about it. Although I have known it. No one knows anything about love, and yet the vast majority of people have known it. Love comes and goes, and pick don’t understand it beforehand, and you don’t understand it afterwards and you understand it least of all when it’s there. And so let me tell you this: no one is cut out for love, and nonetheless, or for precisely that reason, it gets to most of us at some point”. - My review will me posted tomorrow. - #lovequotes #love #quote #robertseethaler #coverlove #bibliophilefeatures #bookstagramfeature #bookworm #booknerd #bookporn #bookaddict ##booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookanddrink #bookandtea #translatedfiction #bookphotography #bookphotographer

I was tagged by the wonderful @but_i_thought_ to do the #top10tbr tag. As you might have noticed by now, I'm not very organized when it comes to reading. I make many plans and mental lists but I allow myself the freedom to digress from them according to my mood. And I digress often. But here are 10 books that I want to read soon. . 📚Some Prefer Nettles by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki - I started the month with 3 books by Japanese authors, I am halfway through another one, and I believe I'll continue the sequence with this novel published in 1929. . 📚Journey by Moonlight, the novel that many consider Antal Szerb's masterpiece, is another book that I'm really excited to read. Lingering in the Hungarian literature department, Gyula Krúdy's Sunflower is among my priority reads as well. . 📚Then there are three books received recently as gifts from dear friends: Der Trafikant by Robert Seethaler (translated as The Tobacconist), Beware of Pity by Stefan Zweig, and Birds of a Lesser Paradise, a collection of short stories by Megan Mayhew Bergman. . 📚Chinua Achebe's The African Trilogy has been on my reading wishlist for a long time. I hope I'll finally dive in. From the classics department, I'm also eyeing Silas Marner by George Eliot. . 📚Last but not least, I want to read Zeno's Conscience by the Italian writer Italo Svevo and Rien où poser sa tête by Françoise Frenkel (recently published and translated to English as No Place to Lay One's Head). . What tops your TBR? I'd love to hear about it. . #chinuaachebe #georgeeliot #italosvevo #antalszerb #junichirotanizaki #stefanzweig #classicliterature #classicbooks #nyrbclassics #gallimard #lelivredepoche #culturetripbooks #bookphotography #translatedfiction

- The Tobacconist | 4 🌟 - In the summer of 1937, Franz Huchel is sent to Vienna to become a tobaccontist’s apprentice wherein he attempts to navigate the new city through the trials of adolescence. Concurrently, Vienna is witnessing political tensions arising from the growing support for the Nazi party. This tension, however, is a backdrop to Franz’s blind love for a cabaret dancer, Anezka, and his impromptu therapy sessions with an elderly, frail Sigmund Freud. The political climate and Franz’s central concerns make for an interesting contrast. As a tobacconist’s apprentice, Franz is required to read every newspaper that enters the shop. Additionally, he witnesses the tensions and anti-Semitism first hand. Nevertheless, he doesn’t seem to understand or really notice what is happening. It is hard to know whether this ignorance stems from his naivety or if it is a wilful blindness towards the cruelty of humanity. - Nevertheless, the tobacconist is a novel about what is just. It is 1939 and Austrian shopkeepers are under attack for serving Jewish customers, pro-nazi propaganda is rampant, and Franz is head over heels in love. Seethaler doesn’t undermine the terrors of the time by choosing not to make the political and social upheaval before and after the annex with Germany the central narrative. Instead, he showcases the need to stand up for what is right from the perspective of a naïve teenager. An individual who will roam the streets of Vienna and fall in love; Who will befriend a tired, old man; Who will have his life irredeemably altered in a matter of months. The latter half of the novel is where the story truly comes into its own. The narrative changes pace to match the upheaval and delivers some very poignant moments. - Spoiler: one such moment Is when an anti-Nazi banner is displayed above a building. The act although largely futile against the Nazi regime is extremely poignant as a final act of rebellion. - P.s. shout out to Charlotte Collins who has once again produced a wonderful translation. - #robertseethaler #bookreview #bibliophile #translatedfiction #review #coverlove #bookphotographer #bookphotography #ww2 #ww2books
